How To Cover A Tattoo

As a makeup artist, I am frequently being asked to cover tattoos for photo shoots and
bridal parties. There are just some situations when a tattoo needs to be hidden. There are many products coming on the market now that tattoos are becoming the social norm. I try to keep up to date by testing them and deciding if they should be part of makeup arsenal.
1. Using a good corrective or camouflage makeup (search the internet for cover makeup, camouflage makeup or concealing makeup to see the brands) I first determine what color or mix of colors to use. This is the most important step because the tattoo should be covered seamlessly and match the skin tone. Test the makeup over an area of the tattoo that meets untattooed skin. There is some trial and error in
determining the correct color or color mix. It just takes some patience.
2. Next once you know your makeup color, use a good camouflage brush. Now you are ready to paint the makeup over the tattoo. I use a thin layer, allow the makeup to dry and gently blot the dried area to see if any of the tattoo is showing through. If there is some shadow, I just repeat the process. It is exactly like painting.
3. I prefer to use a sealing or barrier spray to set the dry makeup. It is fast, easy and does not alter the color of the makeup. Some camouflage makeups require setting powder which just doesn't give as good a result. Once the barrier spray is dry, the tattoo will stay covered all day.
